Y5W

Today Year 5 performed their Spring Assembly for their parents and carers. They were absolutely outstanding and made everybody exceptionally proud.

In Science, we have been learning about states of matter. We acted out being solids, liquids and gasses.

We practised our multiplication and division skills using the game Four Go.

Practising our number skills using Number Stacks.

World Book Day 2023!!!!!

This week we went to Antarctica- well we went virtually!

We used the VR headsets to explore different parts of Antarctica to help us think of vocabulary which we will use to write a diary entry.

This week in our Music lesson, we continued to learn how to play the glockenspiel to Adele's 'Make You Feel My Love'.

The children have also been learning the lyrics in order to perform the song as a group.

Listen to the song at home and sing along.

Make You Feel My Love- Adele

In Maths this week some of us have been exploring multiplication and division. We had fun using games on the site below to help us learn our times table facts.

There are lots of activities you can try at home in the booklet below.

Multiplication and Division Activities

Some of us have been learning about fractions.

Use this game to explore equivalent fractions.

Triplets Equivalent Fractions

You can also try some fraction activities in this booklet at home.

In our Topic, Mountain High, we have been using atlases and maps to investigate different mountains and mountain ranges across the world.

We have also learnt about the different types of mountains and how they are formed.

Did you know that there are five types of mountains? They are:

1. Fold Mountains.

2. Fault-Block Mountains.

3. Dome Mountains.

4. Volcanic Mountains.

5. Plateau Mountains.

Types of Mountains

In PE this week we worked with 5F to practise different types of rolls.

This week we have continued to learn about different types of number. We explored cube numbers and discovered that a cube number is the result when a number has been multiplied by itself twice.

The symbol for cubed is 3.

For example, 8 is a cube number because it’s 2 x 2 x 2 (2 multiplied by itself twice); this is also written as 23 (“two cubed”).

Another example of a cube number is 27 because it’s 33 (3 x 3 x 3, or “three cubed”)

The children worked with their shoulder partners to investigate the first five cube numbers by constructing them with multilink cubes.

We also used Number Stacks to develop key skills linked to number. We used different mathematical equipment to build numbers and investigate how to find more or less than a given number.

Happy New Year!

Welcome to our first blog of 2023.

This week the children have been finding out about different types of number. They explored the properties of Prime and Composite numbers. They learnt that prime numbers have only two factors, the number 1 and the number itself. They found out that composite numbers have more than two factors. They can develop their understanding further by playing the game below.

Pick the Primes game

They also learnt about square numbers.  A square number is the result of a number that has been multiplied by itself. Explore square numbers using the game below.

Hit the Button- Square Numbers

We have also been exploring how addition and subtraction are linked. Play this game to find out how addition and subtraction calculations are related to each other.

Number Fact Families

This week some of us have been learning about factors and multiples in our Maths lessons.

The children can play games to strengthen their understanding of factors and multiples.

Just a reminder that Year 5's Christmas Party will take place next Thursday.

This week in Music we began to learn a very famous rap song, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

We found parts of the rap tricky to do. Follow the link below to practise it at home.

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

Earlier this week, Year 5 had a very special visitor, Wulfric the Viking. We spent the whole day with Wulfric and re-created a long ship voyage from Scandinavia to Lindisfarne, learnt about Viking weapons and armour and created a Shield Wall and investigated a range of historical Viking artefacts.

This week in Maths we have started exploring addition and subtraction. To help us, we played Strike It Out, a two player game which helps us practise mentally adding and subtracting numbers to 20.

In PSHE, we have been thinking about emotions. We played the Emotions game to help us talk about times we have felt happy, sad, proud etc.

On Monday, Year 5 visited the DW Stadium to take part in 'Give Racism the Red Card' workshops. Here are some photographs from our trip.

In our Topic, Name That Place, we learned that in the past, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings travelled from other countries and came to Britain to settle. They didn’t have ready-made towns to move into so created settlements of their own. We found out that many towns in Britain stem from these early settlements and that we can identify the different types of settlement by the ending of their names.

We then used atlases to locate different towns in Britain and identify what kind of settlement they were using the place name endings shown below. We also discussed whether the settlements were Roman, Anglo-Saxon or Viking.

This week we have been thinking about germination. We worked together to plan a fair investigation into what conditions a seed needs in order to germinate.

As part of our topic, Name That Place, we have been learning about settlements. This week the children created a settlement map, using a key.

Welcome to Year 5W's Class Blog.

We have all settled into Year 5 really well and have been very busy this week.

In English, we have been using the model text Elf Road to plan and write a shared portal story. Next week, we will create our own versions of the story.

In Maths, we have been focussing on the place value of numbers up to 1,000,000!!!

We have learnt 'Living On A Prayer' by Bon Jovi and have been performing it this week.
