Happy New Year!
We have had a very busy first week back in Year 5W.
English
In English this week we have been exploring our new class novel, 'The Jamie Drake Equation'. We have read the first two chapters together and the children have thought about the main character, Jamie and his father Dan, who is a world-famous astronaut
Maths
In Maths the children have learnt how to use long multiplication to multiply 2, 3 and 4-digit numbers by a 2-digit number. They have completed multiplication word problems and tackled some tricky multiplication reasoning activities.
Science
We began our new Science topic, Earth and Space. The children completed a quiz to show what they already know. They learnt about the 8 planets that make up our Solar System:-
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
They discovered that Pluto is no longer a major planet but is classified as a dwarf planet.
To help them learn the order of the planets from the Sun, the children created fun mnemonics.
Topic
Our new topic is Mountain High. The children thought about what they already know about mountains and what they will learn about over the next few weeks.
