Friday 30th June

Hello and welcome back to Yr5W blog.

Maths

Area was still our focus this week, but we moved on to area of compound shapes. This is a little tricky as you had to work out what some of the missing lengths around the edge of the compound shape before dividing the L shape into two rectangles.

So one rectangle is 5 x 3 = 15. The other rectangle is 10 - 3 = 7 and 5 - 3 =2 so 7 x 2 = 14

Therefore 15 + 14 = 29cm2.

Finally, we looked at volume; the formula for which is

length x width x height

English

Mrs Dougherty started our lesson by reading the story of Brother Bear. We then had to recognise the six important stages in the story and complete a story board; adding some illustrations as well.

We went on to look at one of the characters of the story and wrote a description of their changing character. This was followed by writing a description of the setting of the story.

Topic

In topic we looked at the fifty states that make up the USA. Our worksheets had a map with the initials of the states on and we had to name them. We also looked at the geographical features of North America and made  a fact sheet poster.

Trips

We were lucky to have two trips this week. One was a maths afternoon at The Dean trust and the other was at Wigan Life and was delivered by the Crucial Crew. These were members of the police, fire services as well as the council and NHS. The afternoon was packed with information; it covered road safety, the importance of recycling, stranger danger, learning how to put someone in the recovery position, looking at sugar in our diets and becoming an accident detective. We thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt lots.

This Week’s Certificate Winner…

The whole class; Mrs Dougherty thought the whole class deserved it as their behaviour was exemplary.
