Week Ending 5th December 2014

Week ending 5th December 2014

What a busy week. Where has it gone?

We have spent much of the week learning all about Winter and what happens during this season. We started off the week thinking about the words we could use to describe Winter, we had some amazing discussions and using a piece of paper shaped as either a snowflake or a snowman we started writing a list. Have a look at the work that is now on display in the classroom.

We also made stars to add to our display, we talked about different positions and used language such as on top of, under, next to and we also developed our pincer skills when decorating them with glitter. They look fantastic when the light is shining on them.
We also thought about the different sizes of objects. We used some Christmas trees and ordered them from shortest to tallest and talked about middle sized and used words such as taller than and shorter than, it was a really fun activity and we learned such a lot. Here we are size ordering.
We also used the Winter theme to learn a little more about patterns, we developed our cutting skills and used them to make and pattern snowmen and all of their wintery clothes. These are just a few of our works of art.

We also explored what happens to water when it freezes. We filled a glove and talked about the best place to put it where it would be really really cold. We came up with the idea of putting it in the freezer. That's exactly what we did and this is the result.

Lewis said it is freezing cold

Nicola said it melts like ice cream

Alfie said it is hard and slippery

Don't forget next week is our trip to Underwater Street, remember to send your child with their lunch in a plastic bag so that we can throw it away afterwards. Have a great weekend. The staff and children in Reception W

Friday 28th November 2014

Welcome back to our blog.

We have been leanring about the signs and symbols that we see around the local environment, we talked about how we can use a sign to tell us information. We were really good at identifying the signs, here are just some of the ones that we knew

We also learned a little more about colour mixing, we talked about the texture of the veins on the leaves and how to add 2 different colours together to create a new one. This is the result of our efforts.

We also held a reading morning in our classroom. We set up lots of different stories and puppets and exciting activities and invited our grown ups to come and share them with us. We wrote an invitation and on Friday they joined us in class. It was a great turn out and i know the grown ups were very impressed with all of the things we have been learning about linked to reading.

And then if that wasn't exciting enough we lifted out our tree and used the decorating of it as a sorting activity - we talked about colours, we sorted sizes and discussed textures as well as learning a little more about why we celebrate Christmas.

Next week we are going to be learning all about Winter and the changes that happen during this season.  Join us again next week to look at more examples of our AMAZING work in Reception W. Have a great weekend. Reception staff and children
