Clip clop clip clop

Can you hear the clip clopping of hooves? That's because we have had another visitor to Year 1 today, can you guess who it could be? Read on to find out!

English

In English we were pleased to find out the Jolly Postman has been found! He wrote us a letter to tell us he was fed up (and a little scared) of seeing the same fairytale characters every day so wanted us to design a new one. We got to work designing lots of different characters including spiders, fairies, pirates and lots more. At the end of the week we wrote a letter back to the Jolly Postman to tell him all about them.

Maths

In Maths we have been learning about fractions. We know that half of something is when it has been split or shared into 2 parts or groups that are equal. We also know that quarter of something is when it has been split or shared into 4 equal parts! We have done lots of work finding half of shapes, string, ribbon and counters and are getting quite good at it now!

Topic

In topic we have continued to find out about people who help us and we had some very special visitors today. They were the mounted police! We got to go out to ask lots of questions and even feed and stroke the horses. Did you know pickwick the horse was 17 hands tall...that's huge!

Well that's all for this week, we hope you enjoyed reading about another adventurous week in Y1W and will see you again next week!

Time flies...

Welcome back to our blog, what a busy week we have had this week even though we have only been in school 3 days!

English

In English we have started reading a new book about 'The Jolly Postman' who travels to lots of different character's houses on his bike to deliver their letters. We discovered on Friday that he has gone missing and was last seen at the wolf's house...we think that pesky wolf might have kidnapped him! We decided we were going to make missing posters to let everybody know he was lost and help to find him.

Maths

In maths this week we have been thinking about measuring in both standard and non-standard units. We measured objects using cubes (non-standard) and rulers (standard) to find out how long they are. We're getting quite good at it now!

Science

In Science we have been learning about animals including humans. We have been thinking about our 5 senses and did an investigation to test how good our senses were. We listened carefully to different sound, touched some mystery objects, smelt some different things and tasted different foods (including lemons!) here are some pictures of our investigation.

Well, That's all for this week

We hope you enjoyed reading, see you all next time

Just call us Fireman Sam!

Welcome back, we've dived straight back into our busy Year 1 work after a relaxing 2 weeks off and we feel like we've never been away!

English

In English we have been learning about poetry. We have been looking at the Julia Donaldson book 'Poems to perform' and have had lots of fun performing different poems to our friends. We have also been writing our own poems using rhyming couplets (that's just 2 lines of a poem that rhyme!) We thought of animals and their actions and added them together to make our own poem. Have a look at our ideas...

Giraffes chomp,

Elephants stomp.

Worms wiggle,

Bugs jiggle.

Monkeys swing,

Birds sing.

Maths

In Maths we have been learning all about addition and subtraction. We know that when adding we are getting more and when subtracting we are getting less. We have been using counters, number lines and even hundred squares to help us solve lots of addition and subtraction calculations.

Topic

Our new topic is called 'People who help us'. We will be learning about people who work in the local community and do jobs that help others. We began the topic with a visit from the fire service. We had chance to look at the fire engine, squirt the hose and even try on some of their uniform. We had so much fun!

Well that's all for this week!

Thanks for reading and have a lovely weekend

Read a book, read a book!

Welcome back to our blog, what a busy week we have had!

We have been working hard as usual but have also had 2 extra special events this week...

World book day

The first event was world book day on Thursday, where we came to school dressed as our favourite characters.

We also brought in a 'book in a bottle' where we had to show our favourite story by putting different objects into a bottle to be used a clues for people to guess the story. Thank you to all the grown ups at home who helped us make them, they looked amazing!

World book day was topped off with our fantastic world book day assembly. We all worked very hard to learn our lines and the words to our songs and our teachers were very proud of us! Thank you to everyone who came to see it!

Our day at the farm...

On Friday we went on our trip to Smithill's farm. We had a glorious day and took part in lots of activities such as holding and stroking the animals, feeding them, going on a donkey ride and even going on a tractor adventure! Here are a few highlights...

Well, that's all for this week!

Thank you for reading and we'll see you again next time,

Welcome back!

Welcome back to our blog, we have had a good rest over half term and are back and raring to go! Read on to find out what we have been up to...

Maths

In our maths lessons this week we have been learning all about weighing. We had lots of fun finding out the heaviest and lightest objects and also weighing things around our classroom using cubes and grams.

English

In our English lessons we have been reading a new story called 'Chalk'. It is all about some children who find some magic chalk which makes all the pictures they draw come to life! We started thinking about what we would draw if we came across some magic chalk and went outside onto the playground to draw our ideas. We have then planned and started writing our own adventure about some magic chalk.

Science

Our new Science topic is all about growing plants. We have been learning about wild flowers, garden flowers and plants we grow to eat. We have made our own fact file to tell people about wild flowers and why they are important for small animals and insects to live in.

Topic

Our new topic is called Farmer Farmer! We are learning about how the land is used in Great Britain for people to live and for farms to grow food. We will be going to visit a farm for our school trip next week to see one in real life and we can't wait!

Well, that's all for this week again.

As you can see we have been really busy again in Year 1 and our week has flown by!

Thank you for reading and we will see you next week

We are Mathemagicians!

We have been learning all about multiplication in Year 1 this week!

Read on to find out what else we have been up to...

Maths

In Maths we have been learning all about multiplication this week. Did you know, multiplying is just the same as adding a group of the same amount again and again. First we looked at repeatedly adding groups of 2 together and writing a number sentence to show what we have done. We quickly realised that our number sentences got very long...

2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2=...

We found there was a much quicker way to record out work, instead of using lots of + symbols, we used a x symbol instead...much better! We had loads of fun multiplying groups of objects, animals and even aliens!

English

In English we have continued our work on 'The Way Back Home' This week we were sent lots of different objects from space by the little boy in the story. We decided to write a letter to thank him for sending them to us. See if you can guess what the different things are that he sent...

Science

In Science we used our knowledge from investigating materials over the last few weeks to design a spacesuit. We decided on something hard and transparent for the helmet such as plastic or glass, and something opaque and stretchy for the body such as fabric. Our designs are being sent to NASA so maybe in a few years time you might see them on a real life astronaut!

Topic

In Topic we have been designing and building our own rocket models. We decided which construction kit would be the best to use and set about making sure we added lots of features such as doors, windows and fuel tanks to make sure they could take us into space!

Well that's all for this week. Thank you for reading and we will see you again next week.

To infinity...and beyond!

Yes you guessed it, this half term we are learning all about space!

Read on to see what we have been up to.

English

In English we have continued our work on the story 'The Way Back Home' We have been using lots of adjectives to help us describe the characters and the setting. We have used 2A sentences (that's a sentence with 2 adjectives before the noun) to make our writing even more interesting!

Maths

In Maths we have been thinking about addition. We have been looking at lots of different ways of adding 2 groups together using counters, pictures and even number lines.

PE

In PE we have been finding different ways of moving across a bench. We used different parts of our body and decided whether we wanted to move forwards or backwards and how we wanted to jump off the end.

Topic

In topic we have been learning all about the history of space travel. We researched and found out lots of facts such as the first animal in space was called Albert II and the first man on the moon was called Neil Armstrong. We then made a timeline to show the order in which the events happened...very clever!

Computing

In Computing we have been learning all about algorithms. That is just another way of saying instructions. We created our own algorithm to tell Miss Galley how to make a jam sandwich. At first our instructions were not very precise and Miss Galley got jam all over her hands and the table. Then we perfected them and ended up with some delicious jam sandwiches...we even got to eat them!

Well that's all for this week. Thank you for reading and we will see you again next week.

Happy New Year!!

Welcome back to our first blog of the new year, we hope you had a lovely Christmas...we did and we're back and ready to learn! Read on to find out what we've been up to.

English

In English we have been reading a new story called 'The way back home'. It is all about a little boy who finds a plane and uses it to fly to the moon, but he gets stuck! He meets a friendly alien with a broken spaceship who is stuck too. They help each other to fix their plane and spaceship and eventually get to go home. We have had lots of fun using finger puppets to act out the story and thinking about what the little boy might be thinking and feeling when he got stuck.

Maths

In Maths this week we have been learning about money. We have been thinking about the value of coins and looking at how many coins make a total amount. We have also had fun playing the coin exchange game and the coin matching game.

Science

In Science we are investigating materials. We have been challenged to design and make a spacesuit for an astronaut to travel to the moon. We completed our initial designs but are going to be investigating which materials are best before we make them in a few weeks.

Keeping Safe

In our keeping safe sessions we have had a special visitor called Louise, she brought her friend Sam along to talk to us about strangers and good and bad feelings. We got to sing songs, play games and share what we know about keeping safe.

Well, that's all for this week, thank you for reading

and we will see you again next week.

We wish it could be Christmas every day!

(Well...it has been this week in Y1W!) Read on to find out what we have been up to!

Welcome to our very last blog of the year! We can't believe how quickly our time in Year 1 has gone so far and how much we have already learned. This week we have had a very Christmassy time with parties, games and lots of lovely Christmas activities to fill our days!

This week we have been making our Christmas cards and practising using our very best handwriting to send home to our loved ones. We have also had lots of fun making Christmas salt dough decorations and Christmas tree toppers, as well as designing our own Christmas jumpers and decorating our own Christmas trees...we have been working so hard, like Santa's little elves!

As well as all our Christmas themed work, we managed to fit in a Christmas party! We all came to school dressed in our beautiful party clothes and made ourselves some party crowns for the big event.

Then on Tuesday afternoon, we partied the time away playing pass the parcel, Christmas corners and even musical statues. We even had time to have a dance off with Y1F and fit in some party food too!

Well, that's all for this week, and this year too!

We hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and get everything you would like from Santa

and we can't wait to see you all again in the New Year! (on Tuesday 6th January)

One week to go . . .

We have had another very busy week in Y1W and we are getting even more excited for Christmas!

Read on to find out about our week ...

English

We have been super busy in English this week! We have been continuing to work on the story ‘The Night Before Christmas’. At the beginning of the week we received a letter from Santa asking about what we do on Christmas morning. He explained he is always so busy, he never gets chance to stop back and see us opening our presents, so wanted us to let him know. We pretended to be the children from the story and did some writing about what we could see on Christmas day morning. Later in the week we had a video message from Santa, we found out that because of all our hard work we are on the good list! We are very pleased and we have been working hard writing letters to Santa about what we would like for Christmas.

Maths

This week in Maths we have be learning about time. We started the week by sequencing events in the day. We then moved on to ordering the days in a week and the months in a year! We have learned some songs to help us remember the days of the week and the months in a year, you will probably hear us singing these at home!

Towards the end of the week we moved on to learning about minutes, days and hours. We did a special challenge to see how many different things we could do in one minute.

Science

In Science we have been continuing to learn about hot and cold countries. This week we have learned about different animals that hibernate and migrate. We sorted different animals into categories of migrate and hibernate. We found out that lots of animals travel to warmer countries in the winter, or migrate, and some animals (usually smaller animals who can’t travel long distances) go to sleep, or hibernate, over Winter.

Computing

In Computing this week we have continued to work on data handling.

We collected information about the temperatures in the different areas of our school. To measure the temperatures we use a machine called LOGIT. We learned that the higher the number on screen the higher the temperature. We found out that the freezer was the coldest area in our school and our classroom was the warmest area.

Keeping Safe

During our keeping safe lesson this week we have been learning about who keeps us safe at home, at school and in the local area. We did a sorting activity and we are becoming aware of the different people who can help to keep us safe.

We hope you have enjoyed reading about what we have been learning about this week.

Have a lovely weekend, we will see you on Monday morning for our final week before Christmas!!

Christmas countdown . . .

This week we have been very excited in Y1W!

It's the time of year when we are counting down to Christmas and we are all feeling very festive! When we came into class on Monday morning our classroom had been decorated with lovely Christmas decorations!

The grown ups said it was Santa’s Elves! Read on to find out about our week . . .

Maths

In Maths this week we have been learning how to find half of an amount. To halve the amount, you share the number of objects equally between two groups and then take one group away so you are left with half! We started by practically halving different amounts of objects and then moved on to halving the amounts of Christmas presents. We are getting really good at this!

Some of us also worked on making the same number in different ways. We are learning that different amounts can be added together to make the same number.

English

This week in English we have started to look at a new story, ‘The Night Before Christmas’. This is a story all about what happens on Christmas Eve...how exciting! This week we have been working hard to use adjectives and similes to describe Santa. Earlier in the week we found out that Santa had gone missing! We worked hard to make wanted posters which described Santa so hopefully someone would find him! We even made job adverts describing his appearance and behaviour just in case he wasn't found before Christmas!

Luckily we found out today that he has been found safe and well, he was looking for some more Elves to help him at this busy time of year!

PHEWWWW!

Science

This week we have been continuing to learn about how the weather changes in different seasons. We wanted to investigate what the weather is like in Winter and so decided we would have to find a way of measuring it. We predicted what we thought the weather is like in Winter (most of us predicted it would be cold!) then we decided to make a weather station. We put a measuring cylinder out on the playground to measure the rain,  we also pit some material out on the playground signpost to measure the wind, finally we put a thermometer in the window to measure the temperature - you may see these when you bring us into school! We will be investigating the weather everyday by checking the weather station to see if our predictions were correct.

Topic

As we have been learning about hot and cold countries, this week we have been exploring warm and cold colours. We looked at the difference between warm and cold colours and thought about how they made us feel. We found that warm colours like red, yellow and orange made us feel calm, relaxed and cosy and that cold colours like blue, green and grey made us feel cold, excited and chilly. In Topic next week we will be working hard to create warm and cold coloured paintings.

Thank you for reading about yet another great week we have had in Year One.

Have a lovely weekend!

See you bright and early on Monday morning!

We’ve had a whale of a time this week!

Yet again we have had another fun filled week in Year 1.

Read on to find out what we have been up to …..

Maths

In Maths this week we have been completing lots of different tasks and activities to show our teachers exactly what we have learned in Year 1 so far. All of our teachers are pleased with the progress we have made since coming into Y1W!

English

You will never guess what we did in English this week…..

WE SAVED A WHALE!

Can you believe it!? On Monday we were informed that there was a beached whale on our playground. It was our job to save the whale! We discussed how we could save the whale and we decided to use buckets of water to splash and spades to dig the sand. With our hard work and teamwork we managed to save the whale and he swam back into the sea to carry on with his adventure, Phewww!

Our English work has been based on this event and we have worked hard to talk about, sequence and report what we did to save the whale. Finally we wrote a report independently about how we saved the whale. Our writing is getting better by the day!

Science

This week we have been continuing to work on seasons and looked at how the trees change in the different seasons. We can tell Winter is around the corner...just look at those bare trees!

Topic

This week we have been continuing to learn more interesting facts about the Antarctic. We know that this is a very cold country and only certain types of animals live there. Brrr!

That’s all for this week! Thank you for reading.

Have a lovely, restful weekend and there might be a surprise for you on Monday morning!

Time flies when you're having fun!!!

It has been another fantastic week in Year 1W. The children have worked their socks off! Read on to find out what we have been learning about...

Maths

In Maths this week we have been learning about capacity. We started the week experimenting with different containers in the water tray and played capacity bingo. We learned new mathematical vocabulary such as: full, empty, half full, nearly empty and nearly full. We focused on understanding what this vocabulary meant. We then looked at fractions of capacity and found half and a quarter of the capacity of a jug. After that we moved on to measuring capacity using cups.

English

This week we focused on the characters from the story ‘The Snail and the Whale’. We pretended to be the snail from the story and based our writing around the different characters we met.  We used interesting adjectives to describe them and similes to compare them to something else to create a picture in our heads. This is making our writing even more interesting! We then wrote a letter to the whale to thank him for the wonderful adventure.

Science

In Science this week we have been learning all about the sun and how this creates our shadows. We wanted to explore our shadows outside but the sun wasn’t being very kind. Instead we used a torch inside and blocked part of the light to make our shadows and shadow puppets. We know that our shadows appear when part of our bodies block a light source such as the sun.

Topic

This week in Topic we have moved on to learning about the features of cold places. We discussed the location of the North and South pole on a globe. We understand that these places are extremely cold because they are the furthest countries form the sun! This week we have been researching the Antarctic/South pole. We found out lots of interesting information about this country and its is our challenge to share our findings with the other Year 1 class.

We hope you have enjoyed reading about what we have been doing this week.

Have a lovely weekend, see you on Monday morning!

Is it Friday already!?

We have been working so hard in Year One, time is flying by!

Read on to find out what we have been doing this week....

Maths

This week we have been looking at shapes and fractions. We have been using mathematical vocabulary such as ‘fraction’ and we know that a fraction is a part of something. We know that when we half something it makes the whole into 2 parts (fractions) that are exactly the same. We then moved on to quarters, we know that to find one quarter of something you have to fold it in half and then fold it in half again. We know that there are four quarters in a whole, four equal parts (fractions). To help us learn about fractions we learned a song all about pizza! I’m sure you will hear us singing it at home…

I’ve got a whole pizza in my hands,

I’ve got a whole pizza in my hands,

I’ve got a whole pizza in my hands,

And now I’ll eat some up.

I’ve got half a pizza in my hands,

I’ve got half a pizza in my hands,

I’ve got half a pizza in my hands,

And now I’ll eat some up.

I’ve got quarter of a pizza in my hands,

I’ve got quarter of a pizza in my hands,

I’ve got quarter of a pizza in my hands,

And now I’ll eat some up.

I’ve got no pizza in my hands,

I’ve got no pizza in my hands,

I’ve got no pizza in my hands,

It’s just an empty pan.

English

This week we have continued working on the story of ‘The Snail and the Whale’. We have been looking at the different settings of the story where the snail and the whale went on their adventure. We have been focusing on the beach setting and the ice cap setting. We thought of adjectives and similes to describe the different settings. We said the beach had ‘golden sand’ and the sea was ‘sparkling like diamonds’. The snail and whale must have had a lovely time on the beach! We used adjectives and similes such as ‘freezing cold water’, ‘ice as hard as a rock’ and ‘stormy sky’ to describe the ice berg setting. Brrrrr, the snail and the whale must have been freezing here! We then used our descriptions of the settings to write a postcard to our families from the locations! Our English work is so interesting!

Science

In Science this week we have been learning all about the sun. Did you know the sun is a star? We know that the sun is a huge ball of gases! Did you know that the earth is just the right distance from the sun so that it is not too hot and not too cold? We learned loads of interesting facts about the sun and are going to be thinking about how it affects the weather and seasons.

Topic

This week in Topic we have been learning about the characteristics of hot countries. We worked hard and packed a suitcase to visit a hot country. We thought about the weather and the types of clothes we would need. We definitely wouldn't need our hats, coats and scarfs to visit a hot country!

Computing

In Computing this week we have been data handling. We already know this means collecting information. We worked as a class to find out the favourite fruit of the children in our class. We used a tally chart to record our votes and then transferred the votes onto a pictogram. Pictograms are really useful for recording information because each picture represents one vote! The strawberries were the most popular fruit with 18 votes...yum yum!

Keeping Safe

This week we discussed how we could keep ourselves healthy. We came up with some fabulous answers, such as drinking water, riding our bike or walking to school, brushing our teeth, eating fruit, eating vegetables and exercising. We also had a very important discussion about how washing our hands helps to keep us healthy as this prevents germs spreading! With our ideas we made a poster to inform children about how to keep healthy.

I'm sure that after reading about everything we have done this week you can see how time is flying by!

The children in need day was fantastic and all of the children looked brilliant in their different costumes!

Thank you very much for your donations for this valuable cause!

Have a lovely restful weekend!

See you all bright and early on Monday morning!

What a wonderful first week back!

We have been doing lots of learning! Here’s what we have been up to…..

Maths

In Maths this week we have been learning all about number sequences, patterns and the value of numbers. We have learned a song to help us remember the number sequence of odd and even numbers.

Here’s the number bond song so you can practice:

I’m a number cruncher and my name is Bod,

I like numbers if their odd,

All odd numbers taste just fine,

And they end in 1,3,5,7,9.

I’m a number cruncher and my name is Steven,

I like numbers if their even,

All even numbers taste just great,

And they end in 0,2,4,6,8.

We now know that odd numbers end in 1,3,5,7,9 and even numbers end in 0,2,4,6,8.

We then moved on to using arrays to help us count in 2s using everyday objects like yoghurt pot holders, flip flop wrapping paper, socks and egg boxes. This was so much fun!

English

Our English work this week has been based on the story of ‘The Snail and the Whale’. We really enjoyed listening to this story and hot seating the characters. We got to find out even more about the characters through actually meeting them! We asked them questions and listened to their answers. We have been concentrating on using adjectives to describe the snail and some of us have been using similes when writing about the snail. We know that when we use similes we are comparing something to something else, to create a picture in our heads.

This is making our writing even more interesting! Wow!

Science

This week we have been introduced to our new Science topic which is all about the weather and seasons. We learned that there are 4 different seasons and thought about how the weather changes through each season. We worked as a team to make a class season wheel to show the order of the seasons, the months in each season and what the weather is like. Have a look below...

Keeping Safe

During circle time this week we have been thinking about how we could keep safe when we are at school, at home and on our way to school. We had discussions about keeping our classroom safe and tidy, internet safety and road safety, we know that it is important to keep safe everywhere we go.

Topic

This week we started our new topic for the term 'Hot and Cold'. We are going to be learning about different hot and cold countries around the world and have already been using a map to find the countries we have visited on our holidays. We know that the countries close to the equator have very hot weather, and countries near the North and South poles are f-f-f-f-freezing! How clever are we?

After a very busy week back in year one, we are all ready for a restful weekend!

Have a lovely weekend!

We we see you bright and early on Monday morning.

Half term is here!!!

Time has flown in year one! We have had 8 hard working, fun weeks already!

I think we are all ready to put our feet up and relax. Here is what we have been up to this week…………..

English

In English this week a special visitor came to visit year 1. We were just talking about the story ‘Room On a Broom” and guess who came into our classroom!?  It was Winifred the witch (Mrs Stubbs’ wicked twin sister), we were very shocked to see her! Winifred came to make a magical potion with us. We added lots of disgusting ingredients like frog wee, dragon blood, lizard snot, wriggly worms and snake skin. When all the ingredients were added and mixed together, the magic potion bubbled, fizzed and overflowed. Winifred told us that the potion was to make teachers act like animals. Luckily the children protected the grown ups and everybody was safe!

After meeting Winifred and helping her to make a potion, we have been working hard to design our own magical potions. We have been thinking of disgusting ingredients and we made a list of what we needed to help us make our own potion. Once we knew which ingredients we needed we created instructions to make our magical potion. This has been so much fun!

Maths

This week we have been focusing on statistics and data handling. Our focus was to find out the favourite Halloween costumes in Year One. We worked hard to make tally charts to record our information. Then we used the tally chart to make a pictogram and used the pictogram to answer questions about the information...

Just call us mathemagicians!

Topic

In Topic this week we have been extremely busy creating our model of Montrose Avenue. We worked in teams to create the different features of Montrose Avenue, using different materials for different buildings, then finally we painted it! You can see by looking at it that it must be Montrose Avenue because of the different buildings and their shapes and sizes.

Keeping Safe

In Keeping Safe this week, we all took part in discussing what we like and enjoy about Year 1 and how we could make it a happier, safer place to be. Some ideas were about being kind to our friends, sharing and helping, other ideas were about looking after our classroom and resources and picking things up off the floor. We are sure that after our discussions Year 1 will be an even happier place to be!

We hope you have enjoyed reading about our super busy week.

We have had yet another busy week in Year 1 W.

Here is what we have been up to......

Maths

In Maths this week we have been learning about number bonds to 10. We know that number bonds to 10 are pairs of numbers which add together to make 10. To help us learn the number bonds to 10 we learned a song:

This goes in the same rhyme as ‘Row, Row, Row your Boat’.

9+1 are number bonds                         1+9 are number bonds

8+2 are friends                                     2+8 are friends

                                     7+3                                                       3+7

                                     6+4                                                       4+6

5+5 are twins                                       5+5 are twins

English

In English this week we have been describing the big bad wolf from the story of the ‘Three Little Pigs’. We are becoming really good at using adjectives to describe the wolf. We had fun acting out the character of the wolf and this helped us to see what the wolf is really like and helped us to write about him.

Science

In Science this week we did another scientific experiment. This week we were investigating which material is the best to use to make an umbrella. We did the experiment using fabric, plastic and paper. We found that the fabric and the paper were not water proof. They would not be good to use as an umbrella! We tested the plastic and we found out that it is waterproof and it would be a good idea to use this material to make an umbrella.

Topic

This week in Topic we have been designing a model of Montrose avenue and next week are going to build it! As we are building next week we will need a lot of junk modelling material to do this. We would be very grateful if next week you could please bring in any empty cardboard boxes, cartons or kitchen roll (we cant use toilet roll). Thank you.

Book Fair- how exciting!

This week we went to the book fair as a class, we choose a book we would like to read,  sat on the comfy couches and looked and read the books.

So that is what we have been up to this week!

Have a lovely relaxing weekend!

Time is flying in Year 1!

We would like to say a huge thank you to all of the parents and carers who attended parent's evening this week. It was lovely to see you and discuss how your child is settling in to year 1! smiley

Here is what we have been up to this week ...

English

We have had another very busy week in English. This week we have been learning all about the setting of the story ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We know that the setting of a story is where the story takes place and have been using adjectives to describe the woods. As the weather was absolutely miserable on Monday, we couldn’t go on a trip to the ALPS to get a real experience of the setting of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. Instead, we explored the woods inside our classroom using photographs and materials we might find in the woods. Some children listened to leaves crunch and explored the bumpy, rough twigs, we would definitely see these in the woods! We used the pictures and our imaginations to draw pictures of the woods and labelled them with adjectives. This really helped up to write our adjective sentences about the woods in our books. We are definitely ready for the weekend after all our hard work.

Maths

We have been working very hard in Maths this week learning all about subtraction. We have been learning the steps we need to take to be able subtract successfully. We used lots of different objects and pictures to help us work out subtraction number sentences.

Science

Science has been so much fun this week! Do you remember last week when we did the Science experiment about the material of the houses in the story of The Three Little Pigs? Well this week we have been investigating different materials to make a new house for the Three Little Pigs. We had to be scientists and predict which material out of plastic, fabric, tinfoil or paper would be the best for the Three Little Pigs new house. Firstly, we made our predictions, most of use predicted that the plastic would be the best material for the Three Little Pigs new house as it is the strongest. However, we didn't just predict and then test the materials with the Big Bad Wolf (Miss Galley very kindly brought her hair dryer in again, thank you Miss Galley smiley), we actually made the houses from the different materials first! We had so much fun doing this! We worked in groups and all worked as a team to created the houses out of the materials. The time came when we had finished making our new houses for the Three Little Pigs and it was time to test which was the strongest. We tested each of the houses using the Big Bad Wolf (Miss Galleys' hairdryer) to huff and puff to try and blow each house down! Guess what? Most of our predictions were correct! The plastic house was the strongest! We know that plastic is a much stronger material that fabric, tinfoil or paper!

Topic

This week we went on a walk along Montrose Avenue to learn a little more about our local area and the buildings nearby to our school. This was really good fun! We all enjoyed exploring the area where we live. We were thinking about the different buildings which we walked past, the different features of Montrose Avenue and also the materials which different buildings were made from. We walked all the way to Pizza Hut and all the way back. We recognised that Pizza Hut has a red roof and there are some very big buildings like the cinema and DW stadium nearby to it. We looked at the different sizes of buildings and the features of the different buildings.

Well, that's all for this week, thank you for reading,

We hope you have a lovely, relaxing weekend.

We have had another fun filled busy week in year 1!

Here's what we have been up to ........

English

We have had such a busy week in English this week! We have moved on to the story of Little Red Riding Hood. This story is set in the woods too (just like the Gruffalo) so on Monday we went up in to the Alps to read it and get a really exciting story experience. We discussed the different characters and talked about whether they were good or bad. Some children even had a go at pretending to be Little Red Riding Hood. When these children put the red cape on they turned in to the character of Little Red Riding Hood. The rest of us asked Little Red Riding Hood questions and she answered them like the real character would! We did this with the Big Bad Wolf too! The Wolf told us that he was waiting in the woods to eat Little Red Riding Hood...how scary! We had lots of fun doing this and we have been doing lot of acting of this story in our role play area.

In year 1 we are learning all about adjectives and how they tell us more information about something. This week we have been using adjectives to describe Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. We are so good at using adjectives, that we have used them to describe the appearance of the characters and also to describe their personality. We have been writing adjective sentences and our work is getting even more interesting!

Maths

In Maths this week we have been learning all about addition. We know that when we add two amounts together we have more. To help us to understand addition we have been outside throwing bean bags in hoops and then putting them altogether and counting out how many we have got. We have been playing fun addition games with counters and dice and writing our own addition number sentences! Some of us have even been using a number line to solve addition calculations, finding the number and then jumping up the number line to add more. Just call us mathemagicians! We have also been doing some problem solving by looking at different patterns and seeing if we could make our own. Can you spot our cube patterns below?

Science

We have had so much fun in Science this week! We were sat at the edges of our seats we were that excited! We have been learning all about different materials, what they are used for and why. For example, we know that a wall can not be made from fabric because it’s not strong enough!

In Science this week we were focusing on the story of the Three Little Pigs. One pig’s house was made of straw, one pig’s house was made of twigs and the last pig’s house was made from bricks. We were being scientists and used the word ‘predict’ to help us think of which house was the strongest. We did an experiment to see if our predictions were accurate. First we made a pig’s house from straw. We didn’t have a big bad wolf with us to huff and puff so we used Miss Galley’s hairdryer (this was just as good). The straw house was not strong and the huff and puff blew the straw everywhere! We definitely won’t be building a house from straw! Next we made a house for the pig from twigs, this was not any stronger and the twigs blew everywhere too. Now we know not to use twigs to build a house! Finally, we made the pig’s house from bricks, the wolf (hairdryer) huffed and puffed, and huffed and puffed again but the house would not budge! Our predictions were correct! The brick house was the strongest! Now we know that bricks are the best material to use when building a house!

Topic

This week we have been working on our ‘all about me' topic. We have been learning  about where we live and where we come to school. We looked at a map to see a bird’s eye view of the area where we live and come to school.  We found out that our school is on a long road called Montrose Avenue. Next week we are going to go on a local walk of our area and have a look around where we live and come to school. We each had our own map to plan a route for our walk next week. We looked carefully at the map to find landmarks. We found our school, Robin Park, DW Stadium and Pizza Hut and we carefully used a felt tip to plan the route for our walk. We are looking forward to going on a walk around our local area next week!

We hope that you have enjoyed reading all about our busy week in year one.

We hope you have a lovely, relaxing weekend.

We have been extremely busy bees in year one!

Here is what we have been up to…..

English

We have been so busy in English this week! For the last four weeks our English work has been all about the Gruffalo. This week we have been into the Alps to build a trap to try and catch the Gruffalo! We used lots of different materials and discussed how we would make the trap, we did a really good job and had lots of fun doing this! Guess what!!!!!...... We caught the Gruffalo! He was caught on cctv falling for the trap and now he has been taken away! Didn’t we do a good job! We then sequenced how we made the trap and made our own instructions of how to make the trap in case the Gruffalo comes back!

Maths

This week we have been focusing on measurement. We have been measuring length and weight. We sorted objects from longest to shortest, used the cubes to measure objects and counted how many cubes long different objects were. We used scales to measure weight and used lots of different objects from around our classroom. We learned that big things can sometimes be light and when things are heavy the scales go down!

Science

In science this week we have been investigating different materials and what they are used for. We went on a material hunt around our school to see what the different materials are used for. We found out that different materials are used for different reasons. Windows are made out of glass so we can see out of them and our desks are made out of wood and are hard so we can do our work on them.

Topic

Topic has been so interesting this week! We have been thinking about how things have changed from many years ago. We had a discussion about how toys have changed, how computers have changed, how cars have changed and even how schools have changed. We had a special visitor this week who came to share with us what it was like when he was growing up. Before he came we thought about different questions which we would like to ask him and we wrote them down so we didn’t forget them. When the visitor came we asked our questions and found out lots of information.

We hope you have enjoyed reading about are extremely busy and fun week.

We are looking forward to next week to do even more learning and investigating!

We hope you have a lovely, restful weekend.

We have had another very busy and very fun week in year one!

We can’t believe we have finished our third week in year one already!

Here’s what we have been doing this week…

English

This week we have been working really hard to complete our sentences describing the mouse from ‘The Gruffalo’. We remembered to use our adjectives so we could describe what the mouse looked like so other people would know what he looked like. We also worked really hard on remembering our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We have also designed some food for the Gruffalo. We did lovely drawings of what the Gruffalo food would look like and labelled the food. We came up with allsorts; snail pie, snake spaghetti and even fox jelly! Ewww! We had lots of fun discussing our Gruffalo food. We went on to writing about what we would need to make our Gruffalo food, this got us thinking!

Maths

What a busy week we have had in maths! This week we have been doing lots of number work. We have been learning all about the concept of ‘more’ and that as numbers get bigger they are worth more. We did lots of counting out with the counters and we could see that as numbers go up the number line they are worth one more. We played games with the number cards to test if we knew what one more was and we did some lovely work in our number books. We have also done some work on partitioning numbers into tens and units and we worked really hard on this!

Science

In Science this week we have been investigating the different materials which objects are made from.

We searched our classroom to see what objects we could find, made of; wood, plastic, metal and glass. We recorded our work by drawing pictures of objects which were made of these materials.

Topic
This week in topic we have talking about our favourite toys and old and new toys. We discussed the difference between the old and new toys. Miss Galley brought in her old computer from when she was our age and it is a lot different to the lovely ipads and tabs we have today. We worked hard to complete a sorting activity and explored the old toys on the carpet.

This was really good fun!

Class treat!

This week we have had our first class treat in Year One. This is because we have been working very hard. Every time the class does super work we move Jack one leaf up the beanstalk. We have been working so hard that we got Jack all the way to the top of the beanstalk and got our class treat. We did a vote to decide what the class treat was going to be. Most of us voted to watch frozen at the cinemas. When we got in class after afternoon play the grown ups had made our classroom into a cinema! The chairs were all in rows, we had the big screen on and we even had pop corn and juice! How lucky are we! We are going to work really hard to get Jack to the top of the beanstalk again because we have had a brilliant afternoon watching frozen and singing along.

Hope you have enjoyed reading all about our busy week.

Have a lovely, restful weekend.

We will see you bright and early Monday morning!

____________________________________________________________________________________

Well, what a busy second week we have had in Year One!
I think we are all ready for a rest this weekend!

English

In English we have been very busy using adjectives to describe the mouse from ‘The Gruffalo’ story. From describing the Gruffalo last week, we remembered that an adjective is a describing word. Some of us have been using our adjectives to make sentences describing the mouse.

Maths

In maths we have been working really hard to do our number work this week. We have done lots of counting, ordering numbers and counting out. We have been outside to do different maths activities like jumping in hoops, ordering numbers and identifying numbers.

Science

This week we have been investigating the difference between hard and soft materials. We found lots of different objects from around the classroom and had fun sorting them into which were hard and which were soft.

Topic

This week we are carrying on with the topic ‘All about me’.

Miss Galley and Mrs Grimes brought in something special to show us, which was all about themselves. Miss Galley brought in some special photographs of when she was growing up and her first teddy. Mrs Grimes brought in a lovely photograph of herself with her family and a lovely special bible from when she was christened. This helped us learn a lot about Miss Galley and Mrs Grimes. We have Also sketched our own self portraits to show everybody a little more about ourselves, and  do you know...we can recognise our friends from their pictures!

Well that’s all for this week!

Thank you for reading and we hope you have a lovely weekend!

Wow!

What a busy fun-filled week we have had in year 1!

We started our week smiling and happy to see our friends and meet our new teachers.

frown

English

In English we have been focusing of ‘The Gruffalo’ story. We have been reading this story and completing lots of activities about it. We have been sequencing the story and we had to really think about what happened in the start, the middle and the end of it. We enjoyed making masks and and acting out 'The Gruffalo in role play. See the fun we had in our photos below! We have also labelled the different characters and tried hard to write different sentences about the story.

We have been using ’The Gruffalo’ story to learning about adjectives which we remember, are describing words. Using our describing words we are in the process of creating our very own scary monster through drawing a picture, labelling and writing sentences using adjectives. How clever!!indecision

Maths

This week in Maths we have been learning all about shapes! We have had fun doing lots of different shape activities. We have been naming and recognising 2D shapes and we have been describing the different 2D shapes to learn their properties. We have been playing shape bingo and have been on shape hunts around the school. Some children have also been learning about 3D shapes and have used wooden blocks to build different models using cubes, cuboids, cylinders and cones!

Science

We have been investigating lots of different materials in Science this week! We have used describing words to talk about the different materials and we used our hands to feel the difference between them. We played a fun guessing game where one of us was blindfolded and everybody else gave us clues to describe the material. We really enjoyed this game and we are looking forward to doing some more investigating.

Topic

Our topic is called ‘All About Me’ and we are learning all about ourselves, our families and where we live. We will find out lots about ourselves, our friends and our grown ups in this topic.

At the end of this week the teachers asked us if we enjoyed year one so far and we said a big 'YES!' We can't wait to do more learning, investigating and exploring.

Well, that's all for this week!

Thank you for reading
