Y3F 2014 - 2015

Friday 12th June 2015

 

Hello and welcome back to our blog. Here's what we have been up to this week....

 

English

We have started our new book, Stickman. The children are really enjoying this and we have done some great work on it already! We have written descriptions, predictions and detailed paragraphs so far!

 

Maths

We have done loads of work in maths this week, it's been very busy! We have done data, looking at bar graphs, word problems using RUCSAC method and symmetry! We took our symmetry outside which was great fun!

 

Science

We have been looking at the things that plants need to keep healthy. We did an experiment with celery and placed in red coloured water to see what would happen to it. Ask your children about their predictions!

 

Topic

Our new topic is all about the famous artist Lowry. We will be exploring his paintings and looking at the local area. 

 

Parent and Child Maths Workshop

Thank you to all who have attended so far, it's been very successful and beneficial so far. If you are interested in joining please speak to me or a member of the Year 3 team.

Hello everyone. Here is what we have been up to in Year 3 this week...

English

We have been writing diaries based on Bill's New Frock considering how he would have felt when he realised he had turned into  girl. We have also written non chronological reports telling Bill all about Westfield, we then typed them up using Word. It was great fun!

 

Maths

We have spent a lot of time on multiplication, we have even started doing the grid method which we really enjoyed doing.

 

Topic

We have been exploring our local area in topic and have ben looking at other major cities and towns locally. We then used our knowledge of where we re to decide which towns are nearest North, South etc to us. The children did really well with this.

 

Computing

We were really lucky this week to have Mr Price come into our class and teach us all about the difference between the internet and the WWW. We even made our own networks in class! It was fab!

Hello and welcome to our blog, here's what we have been up to this week...

 

English

We have been reading a book called 'Bill's New Frock' by Anne Fines. We have loved this story about 12 year old Bill who wakes up one morning to find he's  girl wearing a frilly pink frock!!!

We have produced some diary writing and super sentences from the book and will continue this next week.

 

Maths

We have been doing position and direction in maths and have been learning vocabulary such as North, East, South, West, paces, half a turn, quarter turn and much more....

 

Science

In Science we have been testing materials to see if they are magnetic or non-magnetic. We made some sensible predictions which were confirmed by our results.

 

General Election

To keep in line with the General Election we held our own class vote for Y3F Prime Minister. We had a landslide result with Lily Gilligan being elected. Well done Lily!

 

Well as you can see, it's been a short week but a very busy one! See you all next week.

Hello and welcome back after the Easter holidays....

 

We have hit the ground running this week, here's what we have been up to!!

 

In English we have been working on grammar looking at pronouns, present perfect tense, conjunctions and much more. The children did a great job with this.

 

We have been doing volume and capacity in maths which has been great fun, check out our video!

 

We had a lovely day celebrating St Georges Day and had a great afternoon making things to decorate our classroom.

 

In science we have been investigating magnetic and non magnetic materials and went on a hunt around school to find what objects were magnetic or not!

Super Readers, Star of the Week and Wordless Book Winner!!!

Welcome to our last blog of this term!

 

Well what a week we have had, here is what we have been up to!

 

English

In English we became authors for the week. We took our wordless book, Good Dog Carl and recreated it using our very own dogs! The imagination behind some of he stories was amazing, we were super impressed. We held our own class competition for the best book which was won by Marley Tymon, it was a very tough choice! We also loved sharing our books with Year 4, it was interesting to see what other classes had done. Thank you Mr Price and Year 4!

 

Maths

We have been measuring in units of weight this week. The children weighed different types of objects around the classroom and learned all about grams and kilograms.

 

Topic

We looked at different mountain ranges in Europe and the children were asked to answer a range of questions about what they had learned. A great job done!

 

We were happy to watch Year 5s Easter assembly rehearsal this week, we loved the songs!

We say goodbye to Mrs Stirrup today, she has worked alongside us for many weeks now and we will miss her a lot.

Measuring in Maths!

Hello and Welcome to Year 3's Blog!

 

In English this week we have continued to look at our Wordless Book, 'Good Dog Carl' we have been acting out scenes and started to write our own story to go with the illustrations in the book! We are looking forward to finishing them next week, so we can we see the finished product!  

 

In Maths this week we have been busy measuring and converting measurements. Test us at home to see what we now know! We have looked at mm,cm,m, km, g and kg! Check out our photos!

 

In science this week we have been looking at forces and magnets. We have identified objects which are magnetic and objects which are non magnetic. We are looking forward to going on a magnet hunt around school next week! 

 

A big Congratulations to Harvey, who won the 'pupil of the week' certificate. His handwriting is looking beautiful! And also to Lily who won Mrs Parry' star of the week award!

 

Please remember to bring your colourful clothes in on Monday for our Drumming assembly and we look forward to seeing you all at 2.30pm for our wonderful performance.

Hello and Welcome to Year 3's Blog!

 

We have had another busy week at school! We enjoyed it on Tuesday when the Prison Service and Police service visited school to teach us all about actions and consequences. We learned lots of interesting facts and how to stay safe when outside of school! We had the pleasure of meeting 2 cute, lively police dogs who kept us very entertained. 

 

A big Congratulations to Shaun and Stuart, who won the 'pupil of the week' certificate. We are really pleased to see them settle well into Westfield Life! 

 

We had another fun filled morning this morning watching the Eclipse. We all gathered in the large hall and watched it on a giant screen, it was so fascinating. We came back to class and had a great discussion all about it! It linked very nicely to our Light and Shadows Topic in Science! 

 

Our brains have been working extremely hard this week, we have learned all about volcanoes and mountains around the world and watched some news clips about Natural Disasters. We even wrote a persuasive letter to Miss Power and Mrs Parry encouraging them to visit a range of mountains. We included lots of Super Sentences!

Reading Matt's Million, Red Nose day and Special Person Assembly

Friday 13th March 2015

 

Welcome back to 3F blog.....what a week we have had!!

 

Our week has been based mainly on putting our fantastic Special Person Assembly together. The children worked so hard to learn words to the songs and their own personal lines. They made us all exceptionally proud of them, Year 3 you're fab (so fab) etc... and as a result won the trophy with 3W for their outstanding efforts!

Thank you to all who attended, for those who couldn't make it, the video will be on early next week.

 

We have had a great day today for Red Nose Day and all our activities have been based around Red Nose Day...even Red Nose Day maths!

World Book Day & Reading with Year 5

Hello and Welcome to Year 3's Blog!

 

We have had another busy week at school and we are so ready for the weekend! We had so much fun yesterday dressed up as our favourite book characters!! Miss Power struggled to recognise us all as we looked so great!!

We had princesses, superheroes, Disney Characters and even Horrid Henry!!! A huge thank you to parents for making such an effort!  We loved it!!! We enjoyed reading books from the Book Fayre with Year 5 today, we filled the corridor and shared our favourite books! 

 

A big Congratulations to Alexa, who won the 'Book in a Bottle' competition. 

 

We are also busy preparing  for our Special Person Assembly next Thursday!! Miss Power and Mrs Parry have become song writers over night and we are looking forward to our performance. We sent invitations home this week, so we hope you can all make it!

Hello and welcome to our blog this week.

English

We have started a new book called Matt’s Million which is about a boy who becomes a millionaire over night! We are all really excited about the book and are up to the part where Matt has just told his mum he has all this money. The children have been telling us what they would buy if they had all that money, this ranges from a box of chocolates to a Ferrari!!

Maths

It’s all been about fractions this week, fractions of amounts, comparing them and we even made a fraction wall! This week’s homework is all about fractions too I’m sure you will be impressed with what they have learned so far, we are!

Topic

We have started our new topic all about our Dangerous Planet. This looks at volcanoes, hurricanes, avalanches, floods and other natural disasters. It is going to be a really interesting topic.

Science

We have just finished our Light and Shadow topic and are ready to start our new topic on magnets and springs next week.

Building fraction walls in maths!

Hello and Welcome back to our blog. We have been very busy this week and are very excited about the upcoming break!!!! 

 

ENGLISH

In English this week we have continued reading our Roman Story, We wrote a description pretending we were a Roman Soldier guarding Hadrian's wall! We included lots of Super Sentences in our writing and some brilliant wow words!!! We have also been busy being text detectives, answering comprehension questions all about the Romans!

 

 

 

MATHS

In Maths we have been looking at time! It was very tricky to start with but we are almost experts now when it comes to 12hr, 24hr, analogue and digital clocks! We even looked at telling the time using Roman numerals!

 

TOPIC

We have now come to the end of our Roman Topic. We have looked at Roman Gods and learned all about Hadrian's Wall. Ask us all about it! 

 

 

KEEPING SAFE

This Week it has been Safer Internet Day, We have explored a cyber cafe and discussed what to do if we didn't feel safe when using technology. The children were very mature and shared their ideas and thoughts! There is a great section on our school website all about Keeping safe!!! TAKE A LOOK!!!!

Making Roman mosaics

Friday 6th February 2015

 

Hello and welcome to our blog...this is what we have been up to this week!!!

 

Well what a week we have had in maths, we have been looking at telling the time both digital and analogue. The children made a good start at this but understanding time is quite a difficult concept and I would ask you kindly to please do this at home with your children too. Check out our maths video which shows u a little of what we did this week.

 

In English we have been using our reading skills, super sentence knowledge and even looked at the very grown up 'fronted adverbials' today which your children did a great job with, very well done!

 

In Science we have been continuing with our lights and shadows unit, looking at translucent, transparent and opaque objects. Well done with this year 3!

 

We had great fun making Roman mosaics in topic, even though we made such a mess! The children made a mosaic of Roman numerals, very impressive!!

Super Readers and Pupil and Star of the Week!

Friday 30th January 2015

 

Hello and welcome back to our blog!

We have been linking our topic to English this week and have been discussing the heroic Boudicca which led us to hot seating today. The children came up with some great questions and answers in this session which shows me that they have taken in a lot from this topic, well done!

 

Subtraction has been on the cards in maths, looking at subtracting near multiples of 10. Some found this tricky at first but kept going which always pays off!

 

We have continued our light an shadows topic in science, looking at natural, artificial and reflective light. The children have got a good understanding of this  now.

 

In topic we have been looking at the training and uniform of the Roman Soldiers, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the armour they wore. Some fantastic ideas Year 3, well done!

Hello everyone and welcome back to our blog!

 

We have had an action packed week this week, here's what we have been doing...

 

In English we have been looking at the famous Boudicca, understanding who she was and what we did. This helped us to create some fabulous adjectives and super sentences to describe her.

 

We have been looking at mental strategies for addition in maths, the children did really well using a wide range of strategies that they know and applied them in problem solving.

 

We have continued to look at natural and artificial light in science and the children made great contributions in class towards this.

 

The highlight of the week though has to be our visit from two REAL Roman soldiers. This has aided our topic massively and the children learned so much about Roman life and even how to fight in battles! What a fabulous day!

Our Super Readers and Pupil of the Week!

Hi and welcome back to 3F blog! Here's what we have been up to this week...

 

In English we have been looking at the story of Romulus and Remus. This has given us lots of activities to do including hot seating where the children had to write and answer questions for the very nasty King Amulius!

 

In Maths we have revisited place value and looked at the concept with money. A great job done bby all!

 

We have started our new topic all about the Romans this week and the children are very excited about it. We have looked at the Roman and Empire and where the Romans invaded...ask your children how they would recognise Italy on a map...you will be surprised!!

 

Light and Shadows is our new topic in Science, your children already know the difference between natural and artificial light and gave some very good examples.

 

Well that's all for this week, next week we have a special Roman visitor in school so that will be great!

Hello and welcome back to our class blog. Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

 

The children have been hard at it first week back, they have been making New Years resolutions in English to name one thing, let's hope they stick to them longer than I have!

 

In maths we have been looking at place value, the children have gained a very good understanding of this. Well done!

 

Our new topic this term will be the Romans which follows on from the Iron Age topic that we recently completed. The children have begun to research this topic already and are really excited, as are we!!

We will be sending learning logs and homework next week so we hope for your continued support with this.

Reading has got off to a good start with 10 children reading every day this week...our is to triple this!!!

Super Readers and Christmas Party

 

Friday 19th December 2014

Hello and welcome back to our final blog of 2014. What a term it has been!

 

We have had an action packed Christmas themed week this week from writing letters to Santa in English to finding all possibilities for Elves outfits in Maths!

 

I am sure your children have told you about the cheeky little elves that have been visiting us this week, they have lent themselves to some brilliant elf description writing!

 

We had our Christmas party this week which was lots of fun, the children (and staff) had a brilliant time. The children also enjoyed our cinema afternoon where we had lots of treats and watched the Polar Express – it really got us in the Christmas mood.

 

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support with encouraging your children to read at home, this really does have a tremendous impact upon their understanding and their writing, so thank you again.

 

All that is left to say is all the very best for a safe and happy Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Have fun and enjoy!

Welcome to our blog this week and what a week we have had!

In English we brought to a close our Snowman story and what wonderful pieces of writing your children produced! Their descriptions were amazing and a true credit to the work they have put into their English recently. Well done Year 3!

 

We have been looking at measurement in maths and the different units of measurement. Children explored the classroom with rulers and metre sticks before working out measurement sums.

 

We had a great day at Manchester Museum on Wednesday which was linked to our Stone Age topic. The children became archaeologists for the day and explored different artefacts relating to the Stone Age. We were very proud to see that the children made links between what they have learned in class and what they looked at in the museum.

 

Our xylophone assembly was a huge success. We were so proud of the children’s performance as we are sure you were too.

 

Just a reminder it’s the Christmas party on Wednesday afternoon, the children may wear party clothes.

Friday 5th December 2014...... Hello and Welcome back to our Blog!!

 

ENGLISH.......... In English this week we have been looking at the book The Snowman. It wasn't an ordinary book because it had no words!!!!! We had to look at the pictures and try to tell the story in our mind. We shared what we thought was happening in each picture. We have a wonderful Snowman Display in our class, so we are going to show all of our work on there! 

 

MATHS.......... In Maths this week we have been looking at angles, we used a post it note to measure if objects had a right angle. We have also found angles in shapes and found acute angles and obtuse angles.

 

SCIENCE....... In Science we had a special visitor. Joanne spoke to us all about rocks and showed us some of her special rock collection. We asked her lots of questions and now have a better understanding of where some rocks come from. 

 

TOPIC....... In Topic this week we have been learning about the BRONZE AGE. We thought about artefacts and who they my have belonged to. 

 

Remember we have our School Trip on Wednesday and we are still waiting for some slips and money! Please bring these in on Monday!!!!

Exploring the ALPS and our Super Readers

Hello and welcome to our blog for the 21st November.

We have had a great week looking at the Stone Age in topic and English, fractions in maths and different rocks in science. Your children have worked incredibly hard this week and have produced some very high standards of work.

They really enjoyed making Stone Age weapons and reliving what it might have been like in those times in the ALPS.

A quick reminder that homework needs to be in by Monday, thanks for your support with this so far.

Hello and welcome back to our blog this week. Here’s what we have been up to……

 

In English we have been exploring the Stone Age Boy and wrote a diary entry as if the children were actually him! We had some great interpretations of his adventures, the children did a great job.

 

In maths we have looked at multiplication and division. This led to multiples of numbers and the children had to identify numbers which had the same multiples. Well done to you!

 

We have started our new Rocks and Soils topic this week. We turned into rock detectives looking around the school at how rocks are used every day. There were some very interesting things that we found out – ask your children what they found out.

 

In topic we looked at a timeline from the Stone Age to the Iron Age and learned some really complicated words like Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Mesolithic.

 

We had a great turn out for Children in Need, thank you for your efforts and donations.

7.11.14   Hello and Welcome to Year 3!

 

 

English

 

This week in English we have been looking at a book called 'The Stone Age Boy'. It is all about a little boy who trips down a hole in a forest and ends up in The Stone Age!!!! It is so interesting and we have learnt all about what he does whilst he is on his adventure!!! We have thought about adjectives to describe him and turned these into Super Sentences. 

 

Maths

 

This week in Maths we have been looking at doubling and halving, we know to find half of the tens and then half of the ones, we are really impressing our teachers

 

 

Science 

 

In Science, we have started a new topic all about rocks and soils, we have thought about what we already know and have identified places where we may find different rocks. We have also thought about something that we would like to know by the end of the topic.

 

 

Topic

 

In Topic, we are learning all about the Stone Age!!!!!!! It is so interesting and we have found out many facts. We know how different life was then to now! They made everything out of stone. 

 

 

We are ready for our weekend break now as our brains are so full with new information!

 

Please remember to do your spellings, reading and homework!! We also need trip money as soon as possible!

Hello and welcome to our class blog!

Here is what we have been up to this week....

In Maths we have been looking at statistics and data handling. We have worked on tally charts and bar charts and even went out into the ALPS to find Australian animals to tally up! We had a great time!

 

In English we have been looking at a range of different things from descriptions to comprehension which has all been linked to our Australia topic...it has been really interesting.

We have been looking at our muscles in Science and also vertebrates and invertebrates...ask your children what the difference is between the two!

In Topic we created posters with exciting sentences to promote the different wonders in Australia.

 

Please could you send in any cereal boxes into school on Monday to help with our DT topic. Thank you.

Hello and welcome back to our blog!

We have had another exciting week in 3F this week....here's what we have been up to!

Across both Maths and English we have been looking at ordering. Number order and sequences in Maths and alphabetical ordering in English.

We have been looking at the wonders of Australia in Topic and you will be amazed what your children know about life down under!

In Science we have been naming the bones of our bodies, the actual scientific names for them...super impressive!

Hello and welcome to our class blog! What an exciting week we have had this week learning lots of new things.

We have looked at place value and ordering numbers in Maths, our skeleton in Science and the scientific name for our bones, capital cities and seas in topic and much more!

Our most exciting thing we did this week was going on a treasure hunt in the ALPS where we discovered real treasure in a real treasure chest!! Your children had an amazing time - so did the teachers!

Hello and welcome back to our blog. We have had a super week this week learning lots of new concepts right across the curriculum.

The children have particularly enjoyed The Pirate Code that we have looked at in English and have created some fab pieces of work from it.

Their mental calculation strategies have been put to the test in Maths...we are super impressed with what they have learned so far.

In our topic we have been looking at oceans of the world and have even learned a new song to help us remember them...ask your children to tell you about it!

We would like to say a huge well done to our Super Readers for their efforts at home with their reading, keep it up, it makes a huge difference to what they can achieve in school!

A huge well done to Lily who won Pupil of the Week and Alexa who won Mrs Parry's Star of the Week. Girls, you are stars!

Super Readers!

Friday 12th September

 

Welcome back to our blog!

 

Well our second week back has been a great success. Your children have been busy as ever learning loads of new stuff in Maths, English, Science and Topic.

 

In Maths we have been looking a place value and had great fun making a human number line!

 

We have been exploding sentences in English using a range of exciting vocabulary!

 

We have been looking at a healthy balanced diet in Science, discussing the different food groups.

 

In Topic we have been looking at the different oceans and continents.

 

A special mention to our Super Readers this week - thank you for supporting your children at home!

 

Well done to Corey who won Pupil of the Week and Cerys who won Mrs Parry's Star of the Week. Keep up the good work.

Hello to you all and a warm welcome to Year 3. Hope you all had a fantastic summer holiday.

 

It's been back to work for us in class and we have had an action packed week looking at what this term has in store for us.

 

We have begun our topic which is entitled 'What a Wonderful World', this will look at the seven Continents, countries, cities, seas and oceans and much more. Ask your children to sing you the song about Continents!

 

In Science we re looking at 'Animals including Humans' we had great fun drawing round each other and labelling different bones and organs!

 

We have been learning all about what your children got up to in the holidays in English as they have been writing descriptively about their events.

In Maths we have been looking at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes...they did a fab job!

 

Just a couple of reminders....

PE is on a Friday afternoon, please ensure your child has their kit in on that day.

Reading books are being sent home, we would be grateful if you could listen to your child read every night, even if it's just a few pages, then sign their reading record books. If they read every day they are awarded a certificate at the end of the week and appear on our blog.
