Friday 23rd January

Friday 23rd January

Welcome back to the Year 5W blog. It has been another busy week for us all.

Maths - We began the week by revising all four number operations. We looked at addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. After that, we moved on to positive and negative numbers. We have been using number lines and scales to help us. We have looked at thermometers which help us to tell the temperature. Did you know that water freezes at 0°C? Water below that temperature will be ice (frozen) and we then put the word minus in front of the numbers on the thermometer when we read them.

English - We have been looking at personification this week. Personification is when you give something the qualities of a human when it isn't. For example,

The huge wave swallowed the boat as it sailed on the ocean.

(This is personification as a wave cannot swallow anything as it doesn't have a mouth)

We have looked at pictures as a stimulus and then wrote our own personification sentences. After that, we looked at some poetry and tried to identify where the poet had used personification and why.

An explanation of personification.

Topic - We have continued to look at our new topic for this half term called EARTH AND SPACE. We  have been finding out what it is like to be an astronaut. For example, did you know that when they brush their teeth they have to spit out the toothpaste into a cloth or it will float away around the space station? Yuch! Also, we have been looking at our very own planet Earth. We have had globes out and have studied the oceans and continents.

This week in Assembly our CERTIFICATE WINNER was Callum B for being the first person to gain their Platinum Band in Year 5.

Also, our children who attend DigiSmart with Miss Workman and Mrs Lyon received a certificate for all their hard work on their presentations which we were all lucky to view in a special assembly on Wednesday. These children went on to win The Pupil of the Week Trophy for the Upper Phase....so a huge congratulations and well done to them all. It takes a lot of courage to stand up in front of the whole of the Upper Phase and present a PowerPoint. Every one of them was confident and spoke in a clear voice.

Please take a look at their PowerPoint presentations which follow on from their photographs. We're sure you will agree that they are amazing! The children have researched on the internet by themselves. Then they have put together all the relevant information they found into their presentations, alongside the pictures they wanted.

All the DigiSmart presentations

Our multiplication wristband winners this week are...

Callum H x6x9 and x11x12

Keelan x7x8

Billy x7x8

Also, this week Callum B has achieved his PLATINUM wristband. What a brilliant achievement as the test for this band is really difficult. A massive well done to him for all his hard work on mastering all the multiplication and division facts and being able to apply them in maths.

Finally, all that remains is for us to wish you a fantastic weekend and hope to see you all back in school on Monday.
