Friday 27th February

Friday 27th February

Welcome back to the Year 5W blog. It has been a busy first week after the half term break. Happily, we have all noticed that it is beginning to stay light for longer now.

Maths - This week we have begun looking at fractions. We started by looking at shapes and how we could split them into equal parts. After that we investigated finding a half, a quarter and three quarters of a number. Then we moved on to looking at other fractions of numbers (like two sevenths of 56) We learned DDTT (DIVIDE BY THE DENOMINATOR THEN TIMES BY THE TOP) to help us remember how to tackle a question like this. So, 56 divided by 7=8 then 8 x 2=16 therefore two sevenths of 56 is 16. Knowing our times tables has been VITAL for this task.

English - We have continued work based on our class novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. Our work this week has been about editing our own writing. We have all written an opening to our own Iron Man story. Then we have looked at it again checking for any spelling errors, missing punctuation and grammar mistakes. Also, we have looked to see if we can improve any of the vocabulary. Then we have re-written it for our Iron Man display in class and decorated it so it looks fantastic.

Topic – We have started our new topic for this half term entitled ANCIENT GREECE. We all completed a mind map in our books of what we already know and added things that we would like to find out. Then, working with a partner, we were allowed some research time on the internet. We fed back to class what we had found out. Did you know that in Ancient Greece it was better to be a man as only they had an education? Also, children played a game called knucklebones which was similar to marbles.

Also, as part of our KEEPING SAFE lesson this week we finished our Mission to Mars Challenge. This involved realising the benefits of working collaboratively instead of as an individual. Here are some pictures from the activity…

This week in Assembly our CERTIFICATE WINNER was Rebecca for listening to advice from her teachers and becoming the organised Year 5 pupil we knew she could be! Homework in on time and reading book in every day after reading at home. Well done – now keep it up! She went on to be chosen as PUPIL OF THE WEEK for the Upper Phase by Mrs Parry. A massive well done from all of us – we are super proud!

Our multiplication wristband winners this week were...

Ellie M x3x4

Bradley P x3x4 and x11x12

Keelan x6x9

Also, this week Callum H, Asim and Billy have achieved their GOLD wristband. What a brilliant achievement. A massive well done for all their hard work on mastering ALL the multiplication and division facts and being able to apply them in maths.

Next week, on Thursday 5th March, it is WORLD BOOK DAY. Please help and encourage your child to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. Also, the Book Fair will be open after school from Friday if you would like to come along and have a look. Each child in school will receive a £1 voucher towards the cost of a book £2.99 or more or they can be used to choose one of the free WORLD BOOK DAY titles that are available form most supermarkets and book stores.

Finally, enjoy the weekend and we will see you back in school on Monday – March already!
