Friday 9th January

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Welcome to this week's blog from Year 5W and our first one in 2026.

Maths - This week the children have continued their fractions topic in Maths, they have worked hard to master adding and subtracting fractions.

English - The children have looked at a poem called The Dreadful Menace. The poet who wrote it  is unknown. It was used as a trailer for The Winter Olympics in 2014 by the BBC. The class have listened to the poem, watched a short film clip about it, learned to recite the poem and talked about the what the poet might have meant when using certain words and phrases. Click on the link below to watch the BBC clip...

Our certificate winner this week is Otis for his fantastic knowledge of continents during Geography. He was also chosen as the Upper Phase Pupil of the Week. Well done to Otis from all of Year 5W.

5W are also this week's attendance winners, meaning they can come to school in non-uniform next Friday (16th January).

The children have been set some homework for the weekend based around their Christmas Holiday Reader, The Jamie Drake Equation. They will bring it home today. Here is an excerpt from the book...

Turning back to the whiteboard, our teacher takes aim with her laser pointer to underline the homework task.

INVENT AN ALIEN

"Imagine the planets the Light Swarm probes might discover orbiting Tau Ceti. What strange alien creatures could they find there? For your homework, I want you to invent your own alien species. Think about the kind of world it's from. Does this have jungles or deserts, or might it be some kind of water world? How will this affect the type of alien you will invent? Will it need tentacles instead of arms and legs, like you and me? Maybe it could fly like a bird through clouds of ice and dust?  Use your imagination to answer the following questions: where would this alien live, what might it eat and how could it communicate?"

The children are being asked to complete the same task that Jamie was given in the story by his teacher.

That's all from Year 5 for this week. Have a fantastic weekend. Fingers crossed we manage to avoid any snow in the coming week.
